Student Chromebook Guide

Students in grades 6 through 12 will be issued a Chromebook beginning in the 2018 - 2019 school year.

Students will take the device home each evening and bring it to school every day, so please make sure your student charges it at night.

This page offers some helpful strategies and tips for parents, teachers, and students for Chromebook use and digital resource use. Please review the Chromebook Guide and Frequently Asked Questions document to learn more.

CCPS Chromebook Troubleshooting Guide


As simple as it sounds, shutting the Chromebook off and turning it back on resolves most problems. The Chromebook Help page also provides some general tips and basic troubleshooting steps. Please contact the designated support person in your school if you need assistance.

Class Websites

All CCPS teachers have a website that parents and students can access. The degree to which teachers develop this web footprint will vary by role, grade level, content area, and need. To access the teacher page, go the school's homepage and browse to the staff directory or the academics section of the school website. Teachers supplement Classroom, websites, and instruction with a variety of resources and tools.

Damage, Theft, and Loss

If your Chromebook is damaged, a temporary “loaner” device may be available for check out during repair. Do not attempt to manually repair the Chromebook. Report damage, loss, or theft to the designated school staff as soon as possible. Fines may be imposed depending on investigation results and circumstances.

Off Campus Filtering

Student Chromebooks are subjected to a content filter that limits access to educational resources. Social media sites, gaming, and entertainment/streaming sites are inaccessible regardless of where the Chromebook connects to the internet.

G Suite

The primary productivity tool for students and staff in CCPS is G Suite; a set of online communication & collaboration applications containing word processing, spreadsheets, slide presentations, drawing, email and other tools. Users can access their documents and projects from ANY computer or mobile device with Internet access anywhere.

CCPS has established a G Suite for Education domain (@clarke.k12.va.us) that allows CCPS students & staff to use their CCPS username and password to access school accounts.

Homework and Grades

Google Classroom, part of G Suite for Education, is used to help students and teachers collaborate, provide and receive feedback, track due dates, and turn in assignments. Parent access is also available.

View grades, assignments and test scores that have been posted by teachers in the PowerSchool Parent Portal.

Screen Time Concerns

Teachers use a variety of instructional resources and tools, some digital and some not. We trust our teachers to make the most appropriate choices for each individual student to best meet needs. If you have questions on how to be involved with the technology in your kids’ lives, we recommend Common Sense Media’s ‘Parent Concerns’ web resources. The advice offered is shared from a place of understanding and concern for what’s best for kids and covers topics from social media to cell phones, body image to “haters & trolls” .

Working Without a Connection

Many Google and Chrome applications (including Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides) allow for offline access. This will allow a student to work offline and sync to the network drive as soon as they have network access.

Accessing files from Google Drive on CCPS Chromebooks when no internet is available requires users to enable “Offline” in their settings and allow Google Drive and the Chromebook enough time to sync files. Instructions for enabling offline mode, starting new work, and other offline tasks are found in the guide.

Students in grades 6 through 12 may have the opportunity to check out a hotspot from their school's media center.
