The decision to open, delay, or close Clarke County schools during a flood and/or snow emergency is not taken lightly. The Director of Transportation checks with the Virginia Department of Transportation and State Police on road conditions reviews all possible information on weather conditions and contacts key people regarding conditions in their areas of the county. In addition, the Director of Transportation and bus drivers drive the routes prior to pickup of children on the road.

We spend a great deal of time attempting to assure that the roads are safe. However, a specific number of roads in the county present a serious safety hazard under certain conditions. During weather emergencies, turnarounds on certain narrow gravel or dirt roads are dangerous and sometimes impassable. We have mapped out emergency snow routes that may be implemented during these emergencies.
